Meet the Fellows

Nelius Njuguna, Kenya

Nelius is a lawyer and advocate hailing from Kenya. She has about a year of experience in Public Interest Litigation and is currently hosted at Kituo cha Sheria for her practicum. Nelius explains her experience so far with the host ogrganisation and the practicum in general to have been eye opening.

Human rights and public interest litigation previously seemed distant and unattainable but the practicum has opened me up to a world of possibilities. It has actually inspired to me start my own organization and I am currently in the process of setting it up. — Nelius Njuguna

Nelius’ project deals with violation of the rights of survivors of gender based violence due to the status of gender desks in Kenya. It is thus, Nelius’ long term vision to focus on gender issues with a concentration on women and gender and sexual minorities. One way of achieving this vision is through Jinsia Justice, an organization she is currently setting up, which will be a tool to use the law to champion for gender equality and inclusivity.

An interesting fact about Nelius is that she sometime has gone up to 24 hours without sleeping. This truly embodies the true character of PIL Lawyers well summarised by Counsel David Kabanda — There is no room for sleep in PIL-

Well, Nelius, we hope you become everything you ever wished and more. All the best as you set up Jinsia Justice and thank you for staying on the frontline for the disadvantaged and the voiceless.
