Achak Carol Kay, Uganda

Achak Carol Kay — lawyer, advocate and multitasking extraordinaire (if we do say so ourselves!) hails from Uganda. With two years experience as a public interest litigator under her sleeve, Ms. Achak is already serving her community in not-so-small ways, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

Carol is currently placed at Network for Public Interest Lawyers (NETPIL) for her practicum, whilst simultaneously working for Kiiza and Mugisha Advocates, her place of employment. This has taught her to balance assignments and meet deliverables timely from both work stations. Carol’s mentor Mr. Nsereko Arthur — Head of NETPIL told her that where there is a will there is a way, and so Carol has been making ways.

“Growing old is a privilege denied to many and it is on this premise that the plight of older persons should no longer be neglected” — Achak Carol Kay

Carol is making a way for elderly persons and their right to health/access to medicine as a project case of her choosing. More so however, Carol’s mentor has entrusted her with the noble task of advocating for court rules that will guide how the justice system handles persons with disabilities in Uganda. This is good preparation for all future PIL cases that Carol will work on as they arise, since it is helping her build her network and improve her skills.

As motivated by Mahatma Gandhi’s quote “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members” , Carol advocates for better treatment of elderly persons and aims to create a network of volunteers who can offer legal services to this particular group.

In her spare time, Carol loves to cook and is currently compling different recipes ( yep! — multitasking) to try out in the near future.

Whatever she’s cooking — we’re having! Until then, way to go Carol!
