Meet the Fellows

Najib Kasole, Uganda

Najib Kasole

Najib is a lawyer and advocate from Uganda with about three year of experience in Public Interest Litigation. He is currently hosted at Uwezo Uganda (which prior to gaining independent status was a programme of Twaweza East Africa since 2009).

Overall, Najib feels Uwezo-Uganda is a place to be if one wants to have an indepth understanding of elementary education in Uganda. Being hosted there has rendered Najib an opportunity to meet people who are very knowledgeable in the field of study his case project is about. It has also deepened his knowledge on a range of potentially important influences on children’s learning especially those in government aided/public/community primary schools and even most importantly, allowing him to participate in this year’s national learning assessment process that is being conducted by Uwezo Uganda.

The learning assessments are periodic, independent evaluations of performance of children’s learning in Uganda. These assessments contribute to the accountability of educational systems in the country or to put it differently, they assess if the children in school are really learning.

Najib attest that the practicum has given him the drive to know that public interest litigation is an important thing to do. It is his aspiration to promote equity — a fair chance for every child to access equal education regardless of their socio-economic background.

The more I become experienced, the more I get determined to advocate for the right to quality Universal Primary Education through Public Interest Litigation. The case(s) that I hope to file are not about me but about the community, the future generation. I draw inspiration from the guys at the Equal Education (EE) movement in South Africa. I hope to do what they do in South Africa in Uganda.-Najib Kasole

Now, a fun/interesting fact about Najib is that he does not have one fun/interesting fact. He is born in the 90s. Other than that, he is part of the Bikozulu gang and at times, he stutters. He is also a Feminist Ally, a grammar Nazi who failed chemistry in high school. He was a perpetual noise maker in both primary and high school and has now turned into an avid reader. currently reading Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi’s ‘The First Woman’ and NoViolet Bulawayo’s ‘We Need New Names’.

All our best wishes Najib. We hope you become everything you have ever dreamt of becoming and more!
